Investigation 9: How is Money Spent
Mission: Find & Report & Rate how the nonprofit spends money.
What: All nonprofits need to spend money, they can spend it in three ways: on providing programs and helping people (Programming), on raising money (Fundraising), or on managing the business (Management & General).
Why: It is important the nonprofit spends the majority of its money on helping the people and causes that they support. Remember, all nonprofits need to spend money to manage the organization and raise money. So make sure your nonprofit spends the most money on Programming.
How: Use Charity Navigator or Guidestar (learn how to read tax forms on guidestar). Some nonprofits post their expenses on their websites. Report what the nonprofit spends in each of the categories: Programming, Fundraising, and Management & General.
