Step 1. What does the nonprofit do and say they do. Find out the organization's mission, vision, and program services.

Step 2. How does the nonprofit spend their money? All nonprofits have file the 990 Tax Form with the IRS, they can be found online at GuideStar.

Step 3.Check with the authorities. There are government and independent agencies that help donors find out if the nonprofit is in good standing. Check out the IRS,Better Business Bureau,Charity Navigator, and your state's attorney general.

Step 4. Take the Board Assessment Quiz to determine if the organization is led by a capable group.

Step 5.Rate the organization based on your research.
